1. Buy a sharp pair of scissors
Getting the right tools is key to cutting your hair at home. Buy a sharp pair of scissors and a fine-toothed comb.
2. Wash your hair, but don’t dry it
It’s easier to cut your hair while it’s wet. Shampoo and condition it before you start snipping. Comb your hair once you wash it so it will be tangle free and sleek. If your hair is very thick, it might start to dry before you get around to cutting it, so make sure you have a spray bottle filled with water just in case.
3. Clip up the top portions of your hair
You need to work in several sections. Starting from the bottom layer and then work your way up. Use hair clips to divide your hair into sections. When you’re finished with the bottom layer of the hair, start releasing another section.
4. Find your split ends
If you want to give your hair just a small trim, inspect your hair to see how much you need to cut. If your hair seems unruly or scraggly, then it’s probably damaged and it needs to be cut.

Once you’re finished trimming one layer, make sure the ends match. Grab a section on each side of your face and see if the layers at the same length.
8. Double check once your hair is dry
Once you dry your hair, make sure it’s cut good. Use a mirror to check the hair at the back of your head.
