4 Things You Need To Know Before You Cut Your Own Hair

Truth is, very few stylists would recommend you cutting your own locks. On the other hand, if you only need a simple trip, why not give it a try on your own? It’s not very difficult and you’ll save some money and time.

4-Things-You-Need-To-Know-Before-You-Cut-Your-Own-Hair-1

Here are the 4 things you need to know before you pick up the scissors:

1. Get The Right Tools

Before you start with your cut, make sure you have a spray bottle with water, fine-toothed comb, a large mirror and a hand mirror. The most important thing to have before cutting your hair is a professional quality scissors.

“Typical household scissors aren’t sharp enough and will create split ends,” says Nicole Hitchcock, a stylist in Novato, CA.

2. Start Small

There is no undo button when you cut your hair. Start with small sections and cut more if it’s necessary. Make sure your hair is damp before you start, brush it, part it in the middle and bring those both sides forward to your chest.

“Using your fingers as a guide, cut a straight line. This method will give you a curved/rounded look in the back. For trims that are every 2 to 3 months, cut about half an inch to an inch,” says Lana Grand, a London- and LA-based stylist.

3. Beware of The Bangs

If you decide to cut your own bangs go slow.

“Twist your bangs and elevate the hair straight out from the scalp. Then cut into it rather than trying to cut a straight line. Otherwise, it’s likely you’ll fail horribly and end up looking like a kid. Instead, go for a textured wispy look—it’s easier to achieve. If this sounds too difficult, consider calling your local salon, as many offer complimentary trims for your bangs,” says Lana Grand.

4. Quit While You’re Ahead

Trimming your hair or bangs is one thing but remember to stop if you’re not sure that you can end up with a decent cut. If you end up with a uneven cut, do not panic.

“Make an appointment to visit a professional hair stylist as soon as possible. Explain what happened and describe the look you were going for. Your stylist might be able to turn around your beauty blunder or give you a new style you’ll love,” explains celebrity stylist Peter Lamas.
