Let’s be honest: pixie cuts and short hairstyles have always been adorable, but sometimes something needs celebrity endorsement. Anyone can rock a great look, after all, especially if it’s tailored to your face and fashion sense. Every now and then though, the celebrity world helps a trend really kick off. As these celebrities have shown us, this was the case with the short hairstyles that have taken the world by storm the last couple years. For example:
Jennifer Lawrence
One day on Twitter, the real-life Katniss Everdeen posted a picture of her adorably jubilant smile as she sported her perfect new pixie cut. Suddenly, everyone aged 13-30 was running out to their hairdresser with her selfie on their cellphone. It was the newest, possibly biggest, wave of short hair-wearing women the first-world had ever seen.
Halle Berry
There are those simple, easy kinds of short hairdos that just about anyone can pull off, and then there are the ones that take a little more charisma. The latter could be seen in Halle Berry’s 2009 short ‘do. At the time, it was a very intense look: she would spike or flare it, keeping the sides really short and often buzzed. At the time, the haircut was thought to be shockingly masculine on the sexy actress, but no one could deny how well it worked with her beautiful, sharp facial features.
Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway dreamed a dream in time gone by that she had long, flowing locks. She also played nerdy princesses-to-be in silly Disney flicks. But thanks to her mind-blasting good performance in Les Miserables, where her character lived an awful, painful life including being forced into prostitution to support her daughter, losing her teeth for money, and chopping off her locks, Anne Hathaway and her hair have taken on a much more serious demeanor. Although she grew her hair out a little after that role, she’s kept it short and adorable ever since, and she’s been smiling the whole time.
Emma Watson
You can ask the cast of Seinfeld: it takes hard work to get out of being typecast. Or, you could just pull an Emma Watson and go for a whole new look. Hermione Granger sported long locks all throughout her time at Hogwarts. Emma was always very strongly against being thought of as her Harry Potter character throughout her whole career, and part of breaking that could included sporting a fantastic pixie cut. It suits her even more that her long locks ever did.
Keri Russell
When Keri Russell cut off her long locks years ago, there was backlash galore. It was actually blamed for lowering the ratings of the show she starred in. The actress didn’t sit back and receive the stigmatic accusations, though. She told the world how liberating the cut was for her. She’d had, “hair to her bum” her entire life and the change was 100% worth it in her mind. You tell ‘em, Keri!
Audrey Hepburn
Did you realize Hepburn had long hair? I sure didn’t until I wrote this article. Turns out, it was just up most of the time! When she did cut it all off, the look was almost natural because of this. Hepburn was always beautifully boyish in her looks, so a pixie cut wouldn’t have come as a surprise, except that it wasn’t common for women in Hollywood at the time.
Shailene Woodley
Shailene Woodley cut off her butt-length hair for her role in The Fault in Our Stars, and it was a beautiful homage to both the cancer-ridden character Hazel she was portraying, and the real-life trooper the character was based on. It earns her quite a bit respect in the minds of any Nerd Fighter who knew the story. Plus, it was a nice homage to Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta, who Hazel’s love interest always said she looked like.
