In the Bahamas, there is a beach where you can swim with the famous pigs. They are a huge tourist attraction who come in this paradise just to spend some time with these beautiful animals. And they are all happy – until recently.
Three weeks ago, 7 out of around 22 swimming pigs were found dead at the Exuma Pig Beach, where the animals have lived for the last 30 years. Reportedly tourists were feeding the animals rum and beer.
“The pigs were given the wrong food… We had them pigs there almost 30 years, and never has this happened before,” said one of the pig’s owners, Wayde Nixon.
“Right now it’s blowing out of proportion with people, anybody, bringing food there… giving the pigs beer, rum, riding on top of them, all kinds of stuff,” added Nixon.
The pigs died from food poisoning, and now the Bahamian government has put a stop to tourists feeding the pigs. People will be allowed just to take photographs and see the pigs swim.
The pigs are not native to the island. Some say they were left by a group of sailors, who planned to come back and cook them. Or that the pigs swam over from a shipwreck nearby. However, they lived freely on the sandy beaches until now.
