Jorgen Mouritzen is an elder man from Denmark who claims that he suffered from severe burns on his wrist after his Apple watch all of a sudden started glowing with heat. Jorgen was at a flying club meeting when he felt a burning sensation on his arm and smelled burning flesh.
The strap of the watch started smoldering which caused it to heat up and Jorgen was left with burns on his wrist.
“I could smell the burning flesh. And the strap was so hot that as I scrambled to try and pull it off my arm, I even burnt my fingers,” says Jorgen.
Jorgen reported this incident to Apple but he didn’t receive any reply. On the other hand, Apple explained that they examined Jorgen’s watch, but they didn’t find any evidence that the watch caused the burns. Apple experts explained that the damage to the Apple watch is external and that there’re no active electronics in the band that might cause to heat up.
“There was nothing else around that could have heated the strap up other than the watch, but Apple has still not given me any explanation. I was happy with the watch and generally I’m happy with Apple products, and I’m sure it’s very rare that this should happen. However, I’m surprised it’s taken them so long to do anything or to help out a customer,” says Mr. Mouritzen.
Several other wearers of Apple watches have reported rashes and burns after wearing the device. Apple support page warns of possible reactions to the watch. The Apple Watch, the space gray Apple Watch Sport, the stainless steel parts of some Apple Watch bands and the magnets in the watch and bands, all contain nickel. Apple warns users to be aware of the possibility in case they are susceptible to nickel-related reactions.
