This beauty product has been on the market forever and it seems that is making a huge comeback. We’re talking about facial toner. Most women probably ask themselves: What can toners do for my skin? Well, we consulted with dermatologist Joel Schlessinger and we found out what role toner plays in your skin care routine.
What is exactly toner?
Toner is actually a water-based liquid that contains active ingredients that can help you treat specific issues.
“Not only does it remove debris like oil and traces of makeup, but it soothes, repairs, and smooths the skin’s surface—diminishing blemishes and minimizing signs of redness and inflammation,” says Schlessinger.
Is toner right for every skin type?
“Today’s toners are high quality and made with many of the same ingredients you might find in your other skin care products. Some of the best toners for acne-prone skin contain exfoliating ingredients like amino fruit acids or glycolic acid, while toners made for sensitive skin types are made with soothing thermal spring water,” explains Dr. Joel.
Dr. Joel also recommends using alcohol-free formula regardless of your skin type because alcohol can dry your skin.
How to apply your toner?
Cleanse your skin. Pour 2-3 drops of toner on a cotton pad and apply it on your face.
“Make sure you get enough product on the cotton pad so that it feels damp but not too wet so that you’re wasting the liquid,” says Schlessinger.
Apply the toner on your face and neck, but don’t use too much force. Just apply it with enough pressure to get deep into your pores.
How often should you use toner?
You can apply your toner twice a day, every morning and every night.
“Use it directly after you cleanse your face, before any serums and treatment products, as a second defense against that dirt and grease,” says Schlessinger.
If you have a dry skin, use the toner only at night.
So if you were wondering whether to add toner in your skin care routine, the answer is definitely YES. Toner eliminates grease, dirt and clears your complexion.
