Barney, the ginger cat, spent 20 years giving comfort to people who were visiting their loved one’s graves. Unfortunately, Barney died of old age.
Barney used to live with his owners near the St Sampson’s Parish cemetery in Guernsey, but they moved to another place. Moving didn’t keep Barney away from returning to the cemetery. The cemetery sexton, Alan who looked after the cat since 1996 said that everyone was sad when they found out that Barney has died. Barney got buried in the same cemetery where he comforted so many people. Local people even put a plague on the wall and a bench for little Barney. People just loved this little ginger cat and they were forever grateful for the love and comfort he gave them.
Here are just some of the statements that people wrote about Barney:
“God bless you Barney, remember that lovely sunny afternoon, I laid down on the grass in the cemetery and we cuddled up together for two hours. I needed a friend that day and there you were my angel!! God bless you.”
Sue Falla, whose daughter is buried at the cemetery, writes: “I always felt my young daughter was never alone when he was there. Really going to miss you, Barney, RIP.”
Andy Baker wrote: “He should have his very own little grave there as this was his chosen place while alive. He should be laid to rest there.
Mandy Hardman also added: “He belongs there.”
People were sad about Barney’s death, but at the same time they were glad that they had the chance to meet such a loyal and unique friend. Barney was more than a cat to them, he was an angel.
