How to Get a Free or Low-Cost Car

For most families across the country, it’s hard to imagine getting by without a working vehicle. A car allows you to get back and forth from work, purchase groceries, get children to school, and so much more. Yet, many low-income households don’t have a running vehicle, making it challenging for them to improve their situations.

Often, buying a car is a big expense and, if you can’t afford the monthly payments, then purchasing one from a dealership or private seller might not be an option. Luckily, there are programs that provide free or low-cost cars to families in need. If you are a family in need, here are some resources that may be able to provide you with a vehicle.

Charities and Non-Profits

Some are surprised to hear that there are actually numerous charitable organizations that provide low-income families with cars at little or no cost to them. For example, Goodwill and Vehicles for Change both have programs designed to help needy families get access to a reliable vehicle.

Most of the programs rely on donated cars from families all across the country. When they receive a donation, they make sure the vehicle is in good working order and connect with a family who meets the eligibility requirements. Some of the programs provide free cars while others ensure low-income families get access to an affordable loan and are offered a vehicle at a below-market price.

Eligibility requirements vary by program. In some cases, you will need to have a full-time job, not have any criminal history or DWI/DUI charges on your record, can’t own another vehicle, and must be insurable. Income restrictions are commonly in use by all organizations, though the exact amount required to qualify will differ from one program to the next.

Churches and Religious Organizations

In some cases, churches and religious organizations may also have access to donated vehicles for low-income families, with larger churches being more likely to have such options. Like charity and non-profit programs, eligibility requirements may vary.

Often, you don’t have to be affiliated with any particular religion to qualify potentially. However, if you do attend services at a particular church, it may be wise to start there.

Sweepstakes and Contests

While the odds of winning may be small, depending on the sweepstakes or contest, it is possible to win a car. Anyone from a local radio station to a national company may offer such opportunities, so they can be worth exploring. Just make sure that you read the fine print associated with the contest or sweepstakes as some do require signing up for certain programs or completing various tasks.

Additionally, you’ll be responsible for the taxes, title, and licensing costs associated with the vehicle and the value of the car will be added to your federal (and state, if applicable) income taxes.

Low Income Financial Help also notes that there are other options, like finding a job with a company that provides access to a company car, but those listed above are likely your best option.
