There seems to be a particular theme in today’s TV shows and movies that encompasses a lot of the story lines. Number one, the future is dystopian, ugly, hard to survive, and getting around is extremely difficult. Of course, a lot of the writers of these shows lack any scientific schooling so they really don’t have any basis for the cars, trucks and other types of transportation that the stars of the of the shows use as they traverse the country in search of a safe place to live.
On the other hand, the writers also have the task of keeping their actors in constant danger in order for the show to be fun to watch and exiting. Let’s go over what the real best used cars for doomsday survival would be and why.
Does Your Doomsday Scenario Have Zombies, Walkers, Talkers, and Zees?
This is an important consideration since if there are brain eating creatures constantly following you, coming out of the woods, and controlling all of the cities, you’ll want a vehicle with high ground clearance, a big bumper, and big thick tires. An older, raised or lifted Chevy Suburban Diesel would be an excellent choice in that situation.
The lifted trucks have a high ground clearance that could easily go over any zombies that might be in your path and the over-sized tires resist being punctured by sharp objects so you won’t be changing tires every time you run over a crowd of brain-eating Walkers.
Another key point that many science fiction writers seem to overlook is that older diesel cars and trucks can run perfectly well on home heating oil. That means that all over the entire country there are 500 gallon tanks of fuel that nobody is using, ready for your doomsday survivalists to just pump out and go.
Electric Vehicles Will Eventually Rule the Apocalypse
Depending on how many of these types of shows you like to watch, you’ll note that they spend huge amounts of time looking for fuel from abandoned cars or just other cars with full tanks in order to continue their journey. At least 10% or more of all episodes show the actors walking because there are no cars that run, anywhere nearby.
A perfect solution, one that would be nearly permanent, is to find a large SUV that runs on batteries and electric power. Then, the absolute worst case scenario would be that they would have to wait for a sunny day sometimes to charge their batteries and keep going.
They could find a solar system from any RV, boat, or camping store, and carry it with them to charge their batteries as they go or whenever they stop. In fact, a good sized SUV, RV, or camping trailer, could be outfitted with several solar panel systems and charge the vehicle batteries as they drive down the road.
Final Words
So really, the best used cars for surviving the apocalypse, or any other doomsday, will eventually be battery powered electric cars. They can be charged with mobile solar panels or home-based solar panels and never run out of fuel as long as the sun still rises.
