Have you heard yet about the increased attention that lash services and products are getting? Heard of falsies? How about going to your favorite salon and seeing that they offer “eyelash extensions”? Those are thanks in part to lash professional consultants. Think of a lash professional as a licensed cosmetologist with an add-on certification. These professionals are trained thoroughly on beautifying your hair, skin and nails, but for lash professional consultants, they are all this and more.
To become a lash professional consultant you must meet the following criteria:
- Pursue an academic or vocational post-secondary certificate in cosmetology. Learn about the beauty and self-care industry directly from professionals in an unorthodox classroom setting. Some programs offer classes in rooms that resemble a mini salon!
- Gain some hands-on experience – whether informal or formal through apprenticeships, internships, cooperative education or other types of on-the-job trainings. Look for early work in salons that need assistants or even reception help.
- Apply for your cosmetology license, passing all courses and exams in your state of practice. Before pursuing a certification in any type of cosmetology career, it is important that you review state requirements for cosmetology licensure. You may live in a state where a license is not required for practice.
- Cosmetologists and others interested in extending their learning will enroll in eyelash extension training that averages about 2 days, from a credible organization that provides training, coursework and in-person opportunities to learn from other professionals.
- Utilize your trainings to develop your career as a lash professional consultant. Extend your learning on different extension curls, lash diameters and length, and how to run your eyelash extension consultations. It is important to also learn about preventing allergic reactions, how to treat them, and how to help clients with sensitive eyes.
- Maintain your practice and career by taking care of your tools! Keep your workspace and lash tools sterilized, learn more about extension retention, organization, and new tools or products.
Becoming a lash professional doesn’t mean you just enroll for a two day course and start getting clients on the third day. Just like any other profession in the beauty industry, it will take drive and passion to be successful. When you complete your required licensure, courses, and/or training, look to other lash professional consultants in the field – take advantage of your instructors time and ask them questions!
