Did you know that some owls nap with their face down? They look unbelievably cute while doing it, too. We probably wouldn’t have known about this either, if it wasn’t for journalist Mark Rees. He created the most successful sleeping owl PR campaign and his amazing photos went viral.
Mark explains that the young owls sleep with their head down because their heads are too heavy, so this is the most comfortable napping position for them.
The National Audubon Society published an adorable story about 2 Barred owlets who had fallen out of their nests. The rescuers put back the babies in their nest and observed their recovery.
“Keeping their talons tightly gripped on a branch, the owlets lay down on their stomachs, turned their heads to the side, and fell asleep. Their naps are short, and when they are asleep, they do not like to be awakened, even to be fed,”explain the rescuers.
