BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate is the minimum level of energy needed to sustain the vital functions: digestion, breathing and circulation.
How to Measure Your BMR
There are hundreds of formulas for calculating BMR but the easiest way is to take out your online calculator and see.
However, there is a common formula many experts use to estimate BMR, so get out your calculator and let’s see what we can come up with.
Harris-Benedict Formula
For calculating your BMR, we’re going to use the Harris- Benedict Formula. The formulas are different for women and men.
Female
(447.6 + 9.25 x weight) + (3.10 x height) – (4.33 x age)
Male
(88.4 + 13.4 x weight) + (4.8 x height) – (5.68 x age)
Your height must be in centimeters and weight in kilos.
BMR vs. RMR
There are 2 different measurements in the fitness world. One is the Basal Metabolic Rate and the other one is called Resting Metabolic Rate. In the fitness world, BMR is measured in a lab, in a dark room after 8 hours of sleep and 12 hours fasting.
BMR is the number of calories you burn in a day. Some things can influence your weight loss, such as going out in cold weather and spicy foods. Some things can influence your BMR fot the long-term, such as: menopause, age and weight training.
