1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Facing breast cancer is emotionally and physically exhausting. Some diagnosed women even undergo a mastectomy that leaves them scars as a reminder of the devastating illness. There is one wonderful organization called P.ink that connects women with amazing tattoo artists that help cancer survivors regain their femininity and turn their scars into work of art. One of those tattoo artists is David Allen.
A few years ago, Adriana-a patient who underwent a mastectomy approached David. She wanted David to help her cover the scars and help her regain her femininity.
“Adriana had fought cancer and won… I’ll never forget meeting Adriana and connecting instantly. I wasn’t sure how to be. I knew just a portion of her story and my heart was heavy. Do I respond with pity? Of course compassion, but how much do I show? She walked in and all ambiguity was gone. My job was to be present; to think less about myself,” explains David.
David gave Adriana a beautiful tattoo, a work of art that captured her femininity and gave her control over her life. She turned her scars into something sensual and beautiful.
Adriana is not the only one who turned her scars into gorgeous tattoo. Many cancer survivors reach for tattoo artists to help them cover the scars from their disease and turn them into something gorgeous.
“Breast cancer doesn’t have to leave the last mark.”
