If you look up the history of the trench coat, you will see some very interesting things:
- It was a raincoat.
- It was associated largely with soldiers.
- It was made of waterproof and rather heavy material.
Switch to today’s trench coat and you will see that it:
- It can be worn for virtually any occasion.
- Has become a fashionable garment.
- Is made of different materials, prints and patterns and so on.
So why not make this evergreen garment part of your outfit when you go to a wedding?
Belted trenches
If you are wearing a puffy dress to the wedding, then choose a belted trench coat. This will draw in the waist rather neatly. You can choose the material according to the weather. It is good to stay classic here in terms of sleeves and lapels and buttons but you can experiment with the length of the trench coat. Nothing very short though because the classic trench coat is either knee length or almost ankle length.
The fit
This is an important aspect of the trench coat. The fit has to be great. In fact, you should wear your outfit and then try on the coat on top of it so you will know exactly how it drapes. Remember – it is a formal occasion and you cannot afford to wear an ill-fitting trench coat.
Colors
You will be thoroughly spoilt for choice in this section of your decision making process. There are all kinds of colors out there and the easiest thing that you can do is to choose a solid color that complements your dress. Some great combinations are:
- Black and white.
- Beige coat with bright colors on your outfit.
- Plain color trench coats with printed outfits.
- Navy colors with a nautical outfit and so on.
You can enhance the style quotient by going in for statement shoes or footwear so your entire ensemble speaks of classic and yet unique fashion.
The material
The choice may depend largely on the weather during the wedding. Spring, summer, winter and autumn – are all great seasons to wear a trench coat so choose your material and length accordingly. It is a great idea to try on a bright, full-length trench coat for a winter wedding. Combine it with a subdued print or color in your dress and you have a great way to stay warm and look stylish as well. Bright colors are great during rainy weather too.
Lapels and belts
Trench coats can also be distinguished according to their lapels. Simple rule of thumb – stay away from double breasted trench coats if you are on the heavier side. Go in for sleeker looks instead. Some trench coats may have shades of color on their lapels – check those out for a very stylish twist on this traditional garment.
You can choose to leave the belt untied or tie it up neatly. Here again, you could look for a double shade belt or tie a neat bow to the side of the coat and personalize the trench coat trendily.
