When blogger Em Ford decided to show her no makeup face with acne, she received thousands of comments. Unfortunately, most of them were shocking, offensive and disturbing.
Inspired by the negative things people had said to her, she created the video called “My pale skin” that contains real commentaries about her skin. At the beginning of the video, she’s sitting without makeup and the offensive comments start to appear. “I can’t even look at her face”; “Her face is too ugly”; “Disgusting”; “You look gross” are just some of the offensive comments she received. Then Em starts to cover her acne and transforms her face using makeup. As she continues to change her look, the comments are also starting to change but the insults don’t stop. “You’re putting too much makeup on”; You’re really ugly, that’s why you’re using all that makeup”; “Imagine waking up beside her every morning”…
“I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations for both women and men. One challenge many face today, is that as a society, we’re so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that It can be hard to remember the most important thing — You ARE beautiful,” says Em.
