Many people wash the raw chicken before cooking it thinking it’s safe. Well the truth is quite the opposite.
Safety researches Jennifer Quinlan explains that when you’re washing the chicken, you’re more likely to spread bacteria such as Salmonella and Campylobacter all over your kitchen and yourself. Remember that water is not enough to kill those two bacteria.
Quinlan has worked alongside doctoral student Shauna Henley to find out why people have this habit of washing raw poultry.
“Some think they’re cleaning off germs. Some just want to get slime off, or feel like it’s dirty,” explains Jennifer.
Reality is washing the chicken can increase the risk of harmful bacteria spreading in your kitchen. People can easily get sick if they eat food prepared on contaminated surface. You don’t need to wash the chicken because high temperature will kill all bacteria.
If you want to remove the slime off the chicken, just grab a paper towel and gently wipe the chicken.
