How To Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery

Enhancing the size, shape, or symmetry of the breasts with a breast augmentation procedure is something many people choose to do to reach their ideal aesthetic. However, it is also a significant surgery. As such, it requires some recovery time and pre-surgical precautions to ensure proper healing.

Plastic surgery, like any medical procedure, also comes with some risks. To minimize plastic surgery risks and ensure the desired aesthetic outcome, it is important to properly prepare for your procedure, which should be scheduled with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon.

What to know before going in for breast augmentation surgery

Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that changes the size and/or shape of the breasts. It is sometimes combined with a breast lift procedure, particularly for those with drooping breasts who desire a change in breast size and shape.

Many factors can impact the recovery process, including the technique used for breast augmentation surgery, the location of implant placement, and the location of the incision site.

Technique

Two techniques used for breast augmentations are:

  • Breast implants: The most common breast augmentation technique, implants can be made of either saline or silicone (the latter is more common).
  • Fat transfer: Fat transfer involves harvesting fat from another site in the body, typically the stomach or hips. This results in multiple incision areas that must be cared for after surgery. People desiring a small change in bust size are good candidates for breast augmentation via fat transfer.

Placement

Breast implants and fat deposits can be placed under or over the pectoral muscle. Adding volume under the pectoral muscle typically yields a more natural-looking breast, but this technique requires a longer recovery time. While adding volume over the pectoral muscle requires less recovery, it may appear less natural.

Incision site

When a plastic surgeon inserts an implant or fat deposit during breast augmentation surgery, they can use several different incision sites. For example:

  • Under the breast fold, which is the most common technique since this location hides the incision.
  • Within the nipple, which may be a better option for some individuals. However, this can hinder the ability to breastfeed, so it’s important to discuss the possibility of lactation with your plastic surgeon before choosing this option.
  • In the armpit, which is another discreet option. However, this area can exhibit more pronounced scarring if the incision site is not properly cared for after surgery.

How to prepare for surgery

Breast augmentation surgery typically takes around 1.5 hours to complete unless it is paired with another plastic surgery procedure. Prior to your surgery, ask an adult friend or a family member to accompany you to the procedure to assist with transportation.

To prepare for breast augmentation surgery, you will need to stop taking any medications that can increase your risk of bleeding, such as blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs. Your plastic surgeon can help you determine when to stop taking certain medications, and when to resume them.

You will not be allowed to eat or drink on the day of the surgery, but you may want to pack some healthy snacks for after your procedure. It is also a good idea to bring a phone charger, contact glasses, and a change of clothes in case you require more inpatient recovery time than anticipated.

Remove any jewelry and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to your surgery, such as a shirt that buttons or zips up that is easy to put on after the procedure.

Additional tips are described below.

Stop smoking

If you currently smoke, quit using any nicotine products at least 4-8 weeks prior to surgery. Not only does nicotine delay wound healing by restricting the amount of oxygen available in your body, but smoking before surgery also increases your risk of postoperative blood clots, heart attacks, and heart and lung problems.

Eat well

If you struggle to maintain a healthy diet, you may want to look at your surgery as an opportunity to shift your habits for good. A diet high in processed foods and sugar can delay healing by increasing inflammation, constipation, and pain levels.

On the other hand, a diet rich in fiber, protein, fruits, and vegetables will speed up the healing process.

Practice upper body strength exercises

Upper body strength exercises are not required prior to surgery, but they can help increase your comfort after your procedure. After a breast augmentation, you may notice that your breasts feel heavier than before.

Strengthening your upper body before increasing your breast size can help you feel comfortable and maintain an upright posture after surgery.

Set aside enough time for recovery

Plan to take at least a few days off from work after surgery. You should arrange to have a companion stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery to help with driving, buying groceries, getting dressed, and managing childcare.

After surgery, get plenty of rest so you heal as quickly as possible. To prepare, stock your home with easy-to-make, healthy meals and snacks and identify a comfortable place, such as a supportive chair or a bed, where you can relax for a few days.

Post-op recovery

After your breast augmentation procedure, you will have the option of recovering at home or in a hotel recovery room for the first 24 hours. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe you pain medication and provide you with a custom post-surgical bra to help support your breasts and minimize swelling.

You may feel some pain at the surgical site, but this typically subsides within a few days. However, even after the pain subsides, follow all recovery guidelines to ensure implants stay in place and incisions heal properly.

Most people can return to light lower body exercises, like walking, within 1-2 weeks. Wait 4-6 weeks before doing any upper body workouts, like yoga or weight lifting, and do not lift more than ten pounds until your plastic surgeon says you are ready.

If your plastic surgeon gives you any scar care instructions, follow these as directed to minimize scarring and redness.

Preparation is the key to a seamless breast augmentation recovery

Breast implants can last up to 25 years—with a decision this long-lasting, it is important to choose an expert plastic surgeon who is aligned with your goals to ensure surgery will help you achieve your desired aesthetic.
