Sometimes it seems easier to overlook slight issues around the house rather than address then and potentially have to spend lots fixing them. This isn’t a great way to live, however, as you just never know what further issues could come from overlooking them in the first place. More often than not, fixing a crack when you first see it, or filling in a hole before it gets larger can really help and prevent any further problems. For many people, not having the experience is also an issue, but for many of the smaller tasks around the house you’ll find there’s actually quite an easy solution!
Fixing those Cracks
If you’ve noticed a slight crack in the wall over the last few days, now is the time to sort it out. Leaving that crack for a week or longer can result in the crack growing and creating a larger problem than you had to start with. Whilst you may think it won’t get any worse, it’s not worth taking the risk especially when it’s so quick and easy to fix. Get yourself some Polyfilla and fill in the crack before it gets any worse. If you’re unsure or don’t feel up to doing it yourself, you can always get a handyman in to help, but it’s important to get it sorted sooner rather than later to save yourself time and money!
Safe Decking
Over time, decking can become worn and tired, which can result in it becoming unsafe to use. After a long winter of heavy rain, snow and ice, you’ll find that your decking isn’t quite as strong or presentable as it was a few months before, which is an indication that it needs a little TLC. Your decking should be cleaned properly after winter, to ensure you’ve removed any moss or dirt that has gathered and set, causing the surface of your decking to become slippery and dangerous. Head to a local builder’s merchant such as Milford’s to stock up on the essential cleaning products for your decking. Spending a few hours on cleaning your decking properly will ensure it’s safe and secure, ready for the warmer months ahead.
Check Gutters & Drains
When the guttering around your home gets blocked it can cause a number of issues for you over time. From a few leaves blocking the gutter, you can end up having leaks, overflowing and blockages that require more money to fix. By keeping on top of cleaning your gutters and drainage systems you can avoid any unwanted issues and rest assured that everything’s working as it should be. Try to check and unblock your drains every few weeks, as build up of leaves and debris can happen very quickly and you don’t want to leave it too long, especially during the Autumn/Winter months. Invest in some high-quality drain un-blocker or drain gel to ensure you’re using the best products when it comes to inside your home, as this can become expensive if you use something that isn’t suitable for the job.
Window and Door Maintenance
During the winter, it can become obvious that your windows may have slight draft issues when you feel that horrible cold breeze drifting through the house. This isn’t ideal and is actually really easy to fix. Take a look at all of your windows and ensure that the seals are as they should be. If you notice that the seals are broken, then this is going to cause draft in that particular room. Now is the time to reseal those windows and ensure you’re not wasting money on heating!
When it comes to the doors, you want to make sure that your hardware is in good condition and that the doors themselves are as they should be. After years of use, doors can become damaged or simply start to creak, so it may be time to grease the hinges and ensure that the handles are in good condition going forwards.
