Snow Falls In The Sahara For First Time In 40 Years

This might be the last place you’d expect to find snow, but the small desert town of Ain Sefra in Algeria woke up yesterday afternoon, all covered in white. This happens for the second time in living memory. The first snow was in February 1979.

The Sahara Desert is one of the driest and hottest places of the world with an average temperature of 30C, and it is unusual to see such a rare phenomenon.

The amateur photographer Karim Bouchetata managed to capture this amazing moment on camera.

“Everyone was stunned to see snow falling in the dessert,” he said. “It is such a rare occurrence. It looked amazing as the snow settled on the sand and made a great set of photos. The snow stayed for about a day and has now melted away.”
