There’s nothing better than a new haircut. That amazing feeling when you can’t stop catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. Unfortunately, sometimes wanting to get a new and fresh look can end up coming home with a hairstyle that doesn’t really suit you and makes you look older. Good news is that you can easily update your look without having to spend a lot of time and money.
Some of the world’s best hairstylists are sharing the biggest mistakes women make with their hair.
1. Wrong Length
Finding the perfect cut for your face shape can be quite a search. Talk to your stylist to see what haircut best suits your shape. Remember that hair thins with age.
“If hair is thinning, going shorter is an option. If you’ve had long hair your entire life, it might be time to update to a lob,” says Sam Villa Show Ambassador, Marissa Villa.
Make sure your hair has layers and depth.
2. Cat-Lady Long
All stylists agree that every woman can rock a long hair… to a point. On the other hand, crazy long hair can really age you.
“Too long always ages a woman. I’m not talking past-your-shoulders long, but cat-lady long (not to be confused with Cat Woman),” advises celebrity stylist Mitch Stone.
Stone explains that when your hair passes your ribs, it starts to make you look older.
3. Never Changing your Look
The biggest mistake woman can make is never changing her look, which leads to older appearance.
“If you are 50 years old, the chances are high that you’ve been going to a salon for 25+ years and like the way your hair looked in 1992 when you lost a bunch of weight and had that great red dress you wore to your cousin’s wedding. Which makes it likely that you’ve been instructing hairdresser after hairdresser to recreate that look by showing them that exact dated photo. The reality is, like everything else, hairdressing has evolved dramatically,” says hairstylist Jenna Mast.
It’s important to evolve.
4. Careful With Color
Dyeing your hair too dark can make you look older.
“Your hair color should compliment your skin tone. If you have fair skin, jet black is not the best choice, and it’s always a good idea to have more than one color to add depth and dimension,” explains Sam Villa Show Ambassador, Marissa Villa.
Focus on your skin tone when choosing the right color.
No matter your hair color, if you go up a shade or two, it will give the appearance of looking more youthful, but the placement of highlights is the key.
“Have your hairstylist frame your face to brighten your complexion,” explains celebrity colorist Kelly Gardenas.
5. Wrong Part
Did you know that how you part your hair could age you?
“Straight down the middle doesn’t work for everyone, but you also don’t want to have a severe side part either. A soft, irregular part could be flattering, and don’t forget about bangs; in some cases, they can make you look younger,”explains Sam Villa Show Ambassador, Marissa Villa.
6. Too Much Volume
Adding too much volume to your hair can age you. Our hear gets thinner as we age and that’s why it’s important to talk to your stylist about what volumizing shampoo you should start using.
“Too often, a mature client thinks she must have height. Teased up hair can make anyone look older. Volume is different and can look modern and elegant,” says Damian Santiago, co-owner of Mizu New York salon.
