Mold is not that dangerous by itself, but the bacteria that can grow along with it can make you really sick. You can experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Some mold can damage your liver
Mold can sometimes contain toxic chemicals that can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and liver damage. This depends on your age and your immune system. Some mold can even contain aflatoxin, a toxic substance that can cause cancer. This mold can be found on field corn and peanuts.
You can be allergic to mold
Some people can have mold allergies. Stay away from mold if you’re allergic, and if you’ve eaten some by mistake, immediately contact your doctor. Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction include: hives, rash, itchy and watery eyes, runny or stuffy nose and wheezing.
There are foods with mold that our bodies can digest easily
Mold in some types of cheese is safe to eat, such as gorgonzola, Roquefort, and the blue cheese. These cheese are made by introducing them to specific spores while camembert and brie have white ones.
Here are some foods that are safe to eat after scraping off the mold:
- Hard cheese where mold is not part of the process. Just cut the mold off.
- Hard salami and dry-cured country ham.
- Firm fruits and veggies, as long as you cut off at least 1 inch around.
